Belgians
The 1900 Waukegan census records 55 Belgians living here.
Some names of these first Belgians immigrants were Van Haecke,
DeMeyer, Landit, Shark, Opel, Christeona, Van Hunder, Strobe, and
Deloof. The number went down a little by the 1910 census when
only 42 Belgians lived in Waukegan. The rest of the county contained
127 Belgians.
More Belgians carne to Lake County in 1906. They were contract
workers for the Rock County Sugar Company, which was looking for
farmers to grow sugar beets for them. Sugar beets were a new erop
in the county, and none of the farmers knew how to grow them. All
the farmers had to do was supply the land, and the Belgians would
do all the work.
They already had experience growing the erop in Europe and had
been recruited in Belgium by the company. The Daily Sun wrote that
the Belgians started work at daybreak and only stopped at dusk. All
had been poor peasants in Belgium and had lived a tough life there.
Their usual meal in Belgium consisted of bread and a pint of beer.
They were lucky to get meat once a month.604
The Lake County independent newspaper wrote that just thirty
acres of sugar beets were planted in the county in 1906. Sugar beets
proved to be a very profitable erop for most of the growers that first
year when they made from $75 to $125 an acre. The next year,
eighty-seven acres were contracted out to the Rock County Sugar
Company, and more farmers showed an interest in the erop. The
Belgians, however, didn't work for the company again the next year.
Many stuck around the county and found other work. The company
was planning to bring in German peasants to take their place.605
