We, who have lived with Sr. Bertine for the last 20 years -
she was one of the foundresses of St Mary's Home - remember her as
a typical West-Flemish missionary. Strong headead tenacious at
work, with her "yes" was "yes", and "no" was "no". No coming
back on a decision once taken. Her great love for the poor and
sick made her sometimes hard in defending them. In the dispensary
where she worked, she kept· discipline among the patients, waiting
at the doctor's door.
No favouritisme between nicely dressed ladies and the beggar
in rags. All had to wait their turn. If any one dared to push
aside a poor man she protected him. She was called by Doctor Wolfe,
"my policeman".
She remained at her work till she could no more and the
last months, prayer and knitting for the poor, were her consolation.
Still she managed to help at the washing up after the meals.
That she wouldn't miss for anything in the world. She wanted
to be useful up to the last.
May she rest in peace.
Sr Ann Mary Riskin.
