He held the office of First Sea Lord of the Admiralty between 1912 and 1914. She was born on 25 April 1843 at Buckingham Palace, St. James's, London, England.2 She married Ludwig IV Friedrich Wilhelm Karl Großherzog von Hessen und bei Rhein, son of Karl Wilhelm Ludwig Prinz General von Hessen und bei Rhein and Marie Elisabeth Caroline Viktoria Prinzessin von Preußen, on 1 July 1862 at Osborne House, Osborne, Isle of Wight, England.2 She died on 14 December 1878 at age 35 at Darmstadt, Hessen, Germany, from diptheria, which swept through the palace affecting all but one of her children.3,2

She gained the title of Princess Alice of the United Kingdom.
